Product Description
Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games twice. But now that she's made against each other from the bloody arena alive, she's still not safe. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge. Who can they think should pay for your unrest? Katniss. And what's worse, President Snow has made it clear that no-one else remains safe and secure either. Not Katniss's family, not her friends, not the people of District 12. Powerful and haunting, this thrilling final installment of Suzanne Collins's groundbreaking The Hunger Games trilogy promises to be one of the most talked about books with the year.
A Q&A with Suzanne Collins, Author of Mockingjay (The Final Book of The Hunger Games)
Q: You have said from your start that The Hunger Games story was intended being a trilogy. Did it actually end the best way you planned it from your beginning?

A: Very much so. While I didnrrrt know every detail, of course, the arc with the story from gladiator game, to revolution, to war, towards the eventual outcome remained constant through the writing process.

Q: We understand you worked around the initial screenplay for any film to be depending on The Hunger Games. What could be the biggest difference between writing a novel and writing a screenplay?

A: There was several significant differences. Time, for starters. When you're adapting a novel in to a two-hour movie you cannot take everything with you. The story has to be condensed to fit the modern form. Then there's the question of how best to adopt a book told within the first person and offer tense and transform it into a satisfying dramatic experience. In the novel, you never leave Katniss for the second and are privy to any any of her thoughts so you need a strategy to dramatize her inner world and to generate it feasible for other characters to exist outside her company. Finally, there's the challenge of the simplest way to present the violence while still maintaining a PG-13 rating in order that your core audience can view it. A lot of situations are acceptable on the page that wouldn't be over a screen. But how certain moments are depicted may ultimately be inside the director's hands.

Q: Are you currently in a position to consider future projects while working on The Hunger Games, or are you immersed within the world you might be currently creating so fully who's is too hard to consider new ideas?

A: We've a few seeds of ideas floating around during my head but--given that much of my focus is still on The Hunger Games--it will probably be awhile before one fully emerges and that i can begin to develop it.

Q: The Hunger Games is a yearly televised event by which one boy the other girl from each from the twelve districts is instructed to participate inside a fight-to-the-death on live TV. Exactly what do you imagine the benefit of reality television is--to both kids and adults?

A: Well, they're often set up as games and, like sporting events, there's an curiosity about seeing who wins. The contestants are often unknown, which makes them relatable. Sometimes they've very talented people performing. Then there's the voyeuristic thrill—watching people being humiliated, or taken to tears, or suffering physically--which I have found very disturbing. There's also the opportunity for desensitizing the audience, so that once they see real tragedy playing out on, say, the news, it does not hold the impact it should.

Q: Should you were instructed to compete in the Hunger Games, exactly what do you imagine your skill would be?

A: Hiding. I'd be scaling those trees like Katniss and Rue. Since I accustomed to be trained in sword-fighting, I guess my best hope will be to acquire hold of the rapier if there was one available. But reality is I'd probably get with relation to its a four in Training.

Q: What can you hope readers can come away with whenever they read The Hunger Games trilogy?

A: Questions about how precisely elements in the books might be relevant within their own lives. And, if they're disturbing, what they might do about them.

Q: What were some of your favorite novels when you're a teen?

A: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith
The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers
Nineteen Eighty Four by George Orwell
Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle
Lord from the Flies by William Golding
Boris by Jaapter Haar
Germinal by Emile Zola
Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury

Gr 7 Up–The final installment of Suzanne Collins's trilogy sets Katniss in one more Hunger Game, but now it is for world control. While it is really a clever twist for the original plot, it means that there is certainly less focus for the individual characters plus more on political intrigue and large scale destruction. That said, Carolyn McCormick is constantly on the breathe life into a less vibrant Katniss by displaying despair both at those she feels accountable for killing and and also at her own motives and choices. This is an older, wiser, sadder, and incredibly reluctant heroine, torn between revenge and compassion. McCormick captures these conflicts by changing the pitch and pacing of Katniss's voice. Katniss is both a pawn in the rebels and also the victim of President Snow, who uses Peeta to try and control Katniss. Peeta's struggles are well evidenced as part of his voice, which goes from rage to puzzlement for an unsure go back to sweetness. McCormick also helps make the secondary characters—some malevolent, others benevolent, and a great deal of confused—very real with distinct voices and agendas/concerns. She acts as an outside chronicler in giving listeners just “the facts” but also respects the individuality and unique challenges of each one of the main characters. Starred Review. Reviewed by Megan Whalen Turner
If there really are merely seven original plots inside the world, it's odd that boy meets girl is usually mentioned, and society goes bad and attacks the nice guy never is. Yet we've Fahrenheit 451, The Giver, Your Home of the Scorpion—and now, following a good tradition of Brave New Worlds, The Hunger Games. Collins hasn't tied her future with a specific date, or weighted it down with an excessive amount of finger wagging. Rather less 1984 and rather more Death Race 2000, hers is often a gripping story set in a very postapocalyptic world where a replacement for the United states of america demands a tribute from each of their territories: two children to be used as gladiators in a televised fight towards the death.Katniss, from the proven fact that was once Appalachia, offers to adopt the host to her sister inside the Hunger Games, but after this ultimate sacrifice, she is entirely centered on survival at any cost. It is her teammate, Peeta, who recognizes the significance of holding on one's humanity in such inhuman circumstances. It's a credit to Collins's skill at characterization that Katniss, like a fresh Theseus, is cold, calculating but still likable. She gets the attributes to become a winner, where Peeta has the grace to get a great loser. It's no accident that these games are presented as pop culture. Every generation projects its fear: runaway science, communism, overpopulation, nuclear wars and, now, reality TV. Hawaii of Panem—which needs to keep its tributaries subdued and it is citizens complacent—may have came up with Games, but mindless television will be the real danger, the means in which society pacifies its citizens and punishes people who fail to conform. Will its connection to reality TV, ubiquitous today, date the book? It might, but for now, celebrate this the best book in the right time. What happens as we choose entertainment over humanity? In Collins's world, we'll be obsessed with grooming, we'll talk funny, and many types of our sentences will end with the same rise as questions. When Katniss is shipped to stylists to be made more telegenic before she competes, she stands naked before them, strangely unembarrassed. They're so unlike people that we're no more self-conscious than if a trio of oddly colored birds were pecking around my feet, she thinks. In order to never hate these creatures who're sending her to her death, she imagines them as pets. It's not just the contestants who risk the loss with their humanity. It is who watch. Katniss struggles to win not merely the Games nevertheless the inherent contest for audience approval. Because this is the first book in a very series, not everything is resolved, and what exactly is left unanswered could be the central question. Has she sacrificed too much? We know adequately what she has given approximately survive, but not perhaps the price was too high. Readers will wait eagerly to find out more.
Megan Whalen Turner may be the author from the Newbery Honor book The Thief and its particular sequels, The Queen of Attolia and The King of Attolia. The subsequent book in the series is gonna be published by Greenwillow in 2010.

Grade 7 Up -In a not-too-distant future, the United states of america of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to get replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to engage in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation from the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem since the 24 participants are instructed to eliminate their competitors, literally, effortlessly citizens required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss's young sister, Prim, is selected since the mining district's female representative, Katniss volunteers to adopt her place. She and her male counterpart, Peeta, the son of the town baker who seems to get every among the fighting skills of the lump of bread dough, is planning to be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who've trained just for this their whole lives. Collins's characters are completely realistic and sympathetic while they form alliances and friendships within the face of overwhelming odds; the plot is tense, dramatic, and engrossing. This book will surely resonate with the generation raised on reality shows like 'Survivor' and 'American Gladiator.' Book certainly one of a planned trilogy.Jane Henriksen Baird, Anchorage Public Library, AK

Starred Review. Gr 7 Up--Every year in Panem, the dystopic nation that exists in which the U.S. used to be, the Capitol holds a televised tournament where two teen "tributes" from each from the surrounding districts fight a gruesome battle on the death. Inside The Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, the tributes from impoverished District Twelve, thwarted the Gamemakers, forcing the crooks to let both teens survive. In this rabidly anticipated sequel, Katniss, again the narrator, returns home to discover herself more the center of attention than ever. The sinister President Snow surprises her which has a visit, and Katniss’s fear when Snow meets with her alone is both palpable and justified. Catching Fire is split into three parts: Katniss and Peeta’s mandatory Victory Tour with the districts, preparations for that 75th Annual Hunger Games, and a truncated version of the Games themselves. Slower paced than its predecessor, this sequel explores the country of Panem: its power structure, rumors of an secret district, and a spreading rebellion, ignited by Katniss and Peeta’s subversive victory. Katniss also deepens as a character. Though initially bewildered with the attention paid to her, she comes almost to embrace her status because the rebels’ symbolic leader. Though more from the story happens away from arena than within, this sequel has enough action to impress Hunger Games fans leaving enough questions tantalizingly unanswered for readers being desperate for that next installment.

Reviewers were pleased to report how the Hunger Games trilogy is alive and well, and looked forward to the third book within the series after this one's stunning conclusion. But they disagreed over whether Catching Fire was just like the first book Hunger Games or should be viewed as somewhat of an "sophomore slump." Several critics who remained unconvinced by Katniss's romantic dilemma made unfavorable comparisons to the human-vampire-werewolf love triangle in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series. But most reviewers felt that Catching Fire used to be a thrill because Collins replicated her initial success at balancing action, violence, and heroism in a very method in which will enthrall young readers without giving them (too many) nightmares.
